5 Free Things Healthcare Marketers Can Do Right Now to Improve their Web Site’s Search Engine Rankings (With Helpful Links)

You’re a savvy healthcare marketer, and you know that SEO makes a big difference in helping the right people find your web site. Here are a few things you can do, right now, for free, to help you improve your web site’s search engine ranking.

  1. Update your meta descriptions on your web pages.

Your meta description may be displayed under your search engine results, so make sure it is a phrase that can be read, not just a string of keywords. That said, make sure you incorporate keywords! Keep it to 275 characters, which is the max that Google displays. For example, one of our healthcare client’s site has the following description:

“AdvancedMD is the complete cloud software for independent medical practices that delivers industry leading patient outcomes & financial performance.”

  2. List your web page URLs with search engines for indexing.

Search engines know web pages exist by crawling the internet and indexing them. Go right to the source. Tell search engines about your page by submitting your URLs with them.

Bonus: An unexpected boon for us has been listing our blogs with StumbleUpon. Choose relevant categories in which to list them, like “Health Solutions” or “Internet Technology.”

  3. Set up a free Google My Business listing.

You'll get a postcard in the mail to verify your address. Keeping your business details accurate and updated will help search engines drive quality, relevant traffic to you. https://www.google.com/business/?gmbsrc=ww-ww-et-gs-z-gmb-v-z-h~bhc-core-u

  4. Be thoughtful and active on social media.

There is a strong correlation between social media activity and search rankings. Even organic posts boost SEO considerably. The general idea behind this is that the more links that point back to your web site, particularly if they come from reputable and healthcare-relevant sources, the better your page will rank. Still, a very recent experiment has found that even social activity without acquiring links boosts SEO. (Paid social media posts increases it even more.) https://blog.hootsuite.com/social-media-seo-experiment/

  5. Use relevant healthcare keywords on your pages.

Google will know if you’re just spamming a page with keywords, so use several relevant keywords in natural language. We’re healthcare and healthIT marketers, so those types of keywords will appear organically in our writing. Not sure what the best keywords to use are? Try checking out Google Trends https://trends.google.com/ and Wordstream’s Free Keyword Tool (choose “Health” industry): https://www.wordstream.com/keywords.
