The significance of Women's History Month cannot be overstated. It is a time dedicated to acknowledging the achievements, struggles, and contributions of women across the ages. This month serves as a poignant reminder of the indispensable role women have played in molding our societies, pushing forward rights and opportunities, and shattering barriers across various domains. By bringing these contributions to light, Women's History Month does more than just honor the past; it inspires future generations to persist in the fight for equality and justice. KNB Communications stands firmly committed to these ideals, integrating the principles of equality and inclusiveness into every facet of its operations. Through active promotion of awareness, education, and celebration of women's achievements—both internally and in its broader community activities—KNB Communications demonstrates its unwavering dedication to creating a space where the contributions of all are recognized and where equality reigns supreme.

For Women's History Month, the team at KNB Communications took part in a fun and educational game called KNBingo. Here's how it worked: Every team member received a special bingo card filled with different tasks. These tasks were all about celebrating, honoring, and discovering more about the important contributions of women throughout history. Everyone completed their assigned activities and then shared what they learned and felt during the process. It was a unique way to engage with Women's History Month and learn something new!

Gaby Hermes

Operations Manager

  • Educate yourself on the history of women in medicine.
  • Recognize and challenge unconscious bias in hiring and promotions.

Which task or action did you enjoy the most, and why?

Diving into "A History of Women in Medicine: Cunning Women, Physicians, Witches" by Sineade Spearing was hands-down the most fulfilling part of my Women's History Month journey. It felt like uncovering a hidden trove of stories about remarkable women who defied limitations to excel in the healing arts. Each page turned was a revelation of the resilience, brilliance, and sheer determination of these trailblazers. It wasn't just about history for me; it was a journey to understand the roots of perseverance, which I believe is essential in any field.

What insights did you gain about women, women’s history, women’s achievements, women’s challenges, women’s roles, or women’s representation as they relate to healthcare / marketing / PR / media relations / workplace?

This exploration shined a light on a powerful truth: women have been instrumental, yet often overlooked, architects in shaping healthcare and many other sectors, like marketing and PR. The parallels between the struggles and achievements of women in medicine and their journey in the workplace, particularly male-dominated roles, were undeniable. It emphasized the ongoing need for diversity and equity, not just as empty HR jargon but as fundamental building blocks that drive creativity, innovation, and effectiveness in our agency and the industry as a whole.

What was the most surprising thing you learned about while completing the activity or activities?

I was really blown away by the stories of women throughout history who literally dressed as men to break into the medical field. Their audacity to defy norms and pursue their passion for medicine was not just surprising but deeply inspiring. It made me reflect on the more subtle forms of courage required today to challenge the status quo, whether it's in healthcare, marketing, or any other field. These stories are a powerful reminder that breaking barriers often requires boldness and creativity in equal measure.

How has completing the activities influenced you, your actions, or your attitudes?

These activities have been a profound reminder of the value of diversity, equity, and inclusion in creating a vibrant, innovative, and resilient workplace. It's sharpened my commitment to further championing these principles within KNB Communications. The experience highlighted the importance of continuing to foster an environment where diverse voices and perspectives are not just welcomed but are seen as indispensable to our success.

What task do you think had the most significant impact on your professional development, and in what way?

The DEI 101 training reinforced my existing understanding and beliefs regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion. It helped me discover my own unconscious biases and echoed the importance of these principles in our operations, affirming the strategies I already employ and developing new ones to recognize and challenge biases. This experience has further solidified my commitment to promoting a more inclusive and engaging environment at KNB Communications. It has also reaffirmed my approach to leadership, emphasizing the importance of cultivating a workplace that appreciates diversity at every level.

Mahlia Flores

Spring Intern 2024

  • Network with female professionals in the marketing industry
  • Follow + engage with women in PR on social media
  • Follow + amplify female healthcare pros on social media

Which task or action did you enjoy the most, and why?

I appreciated the opportunity to network with female marketing professionals at “Meet the Marketers,” an event hosted by the University of San Diego and San Diego’s American Marketing Association. I received genuine insight into a future in marketing across various positions, concentrations, and agency cultures. By cultivating meaningful relationships with female marketing leaders in the San Diego region, I embedded myself in a community I hope to contribute to post-graduation. Moreover, I received truthful feedback on how to leverage my EQ and IQ throughout the interview processes, my career, and future leadership positions. This event, similar to many other networking opportunities at USD, would not be possible without incredible role models, including Maya Sykes (Professional Development Advisor), Corinne Hoare (PR Professor), Justine Farrell (Marketing Department Chair), and many other impactful women in marketing + PR.

Can you share a story about a specific moment or interaction that was particularly impactful for you during this challenge?

As a self-disciplined young marketer, I’ve worked relentlessly to build my personal brand, including credibility, to support my experience. This includes requesting mentorship - or a mere 15-minute informational interview with leading female marketers to discover the trajectory that accelerated their current role of impact - or seeking input from past USD professors on how I may elevate my elegance, technical skills, and portfolio. During a recent networking event, a recruiter I connected with and reached out to remembered my name and applauded my continual effort to stay engaged and current with updates from her agency. She reiterated how important it is to remain ambitious, defy setbacks, and, eventually, reap the fruits of my work ethic; women genuinely empower and root for other women - we love to see it!

How has completing the activities influenced you, your actions, or your attitudes?

After completing the activities, I feel more connected with the women market leaders in San Diego, personally and professionally. An opportunity to communicate with others face-to-face transforms human connectivity and delves into deeper conversations, commonalities, and trust. At the end of the day, that’s what we’re after, right? For this reason, the activities completed for the Women’s History Month campaign have allowed me to harness the guidance, feedback, and wisdom from female role models I admire.

What task do you think had the most significant impact on your personal development, and in what way?

Networking with female marketing professionals left a profound impact on my personal development. Forming authentic connections with San Diego marketing natives assured me that this community is unlike others; women are uplifting women. I’ve carefully evaluated my core values, and regardless of where my career takes me, I am committed to collaborating with others who share my respect for integrity, empowerment, equality, kindness, and transparency.

What task do you think had the most significant impact on your professional development, and in what way?

Following and engaging with women in PR through LinkedIn has introduced me to various thought-provoking perspectives, conversations, and opportunities. Utilizing today’s digital infrastructure has augmented my ability to connect top-level executives, recruiters, and mentors and monitor impactful media and opportunities because this information is available at hand.

What resources or tools did you find most helpful in completing the tasks + activities?

To connect with female healthcare professionals on social media, I utilized my KNB network and followed female leaders who exemplify the intelligence, credibility, and impact that I hope to accentuate in the future!

After completing the activities, how do you intend to inspire or encourage others to engage in similar activities or actions?

To encourage my peers to engage in similar activities, I plan to share the results of my actions: the feeling of empowerment, an expanded professional network, and the realization that I can overcome any challenge.

Cate Geiger

Spring 2024 Intern

  • Educate yourself on the history of women in medicine
  • Follow and amplify female healthcare professionals on social media
  • Follow + engage with women in PR on social media

Which task or action did you enjoy the most, and why?

The task I enjoyed the most was following and engaging with women in PR on social media. Engaging in conversations on social media with female public relations professionals, specifically Madison Terrill at Starfall PR, has been a rewarding experience for me. Due to Madison's unique perspective as a woman and her depth of knowledge in the PR industry, our conversations have been both enlightening and educational. Staying in touch with Madison and other women in PR has created a sense of community for me and offered beneficial networking possibilities, whether by discussing the newest developments in PR techniques or exchanging experiences navigating the business.

What resources or tools did you find most helpful in completing the tasks / activities?

In completing the tasks and activities, social media platforms such as Instagram, LinkedIn, and Twitter have been very helpful in interacting with women working in PR and healthcare, publicizing their accomplishments, and raising awareness of them.

How has completing the activities influenced you, your actions, or your attitudes?

Completing the activities has influenced my actions and attitudes for various reasons. First, my awareness of the challenges and accomplishments made by women in PR and healthcare has increased as a result of engaging in each activity. Understanding their challenges, achievements, and experiences has extended my perspectives and improved my understanding of women's roles in these fields. Using social media to interact with women in PR and healthcare has made it easier to interact and collaborate with individuals with similar values. Creating an inspiring network of supporters and activists has made me more determined to promote equal rights for women and create inclusive spaces.

What task do you think had the most significant impact on your professional development, and in what way?

For several reasons, numerous social media interactions with PR women have significantly impacted my professional growth. As an intern, interacting with and following women in PR led me to obtain abundant knowledge, perspectives, and expertise surrounding the field. I acquired essential skills and kept up with recent developments and trends by examining their methods, approaches, and accomplishments. Additionally, interacting on social media with other women in PR created a supportive network where I can share ideas, work together on initiatives, and celebrate one another’s accomplishments.

After completing the activities, how do you intend to inspire or encourage others to engage in similar activities or actions?

After completing the activities, I intend to inspire others to engage in similar activities by discussing my personal experiences and points of view with friends, family, and my community. For example, one can achieve this by creating a blog or social media post and having in-person interactions to discuss the value of female healthcare professionals and women in PR and share the history of medicine. Next, I intend to honor women's accomplishments and successes in PR and healthcare.  Acknowledge their contributions publicly and inspire others to follow as well. Lastly, another way that I will encourage others is to provide information and resources to those interested in participating. This will include sharing lists of powerful women in public relations, suggesting readings or films about women in medicine, and giving recommendations for medical professionals on social media platforms.

How do you plan to continue supporting women’s health, achievements, and rights beyond Women’s History Month?

After reflecting on this month’s Women’s History Month activities, I will specifically be following and engaging with women in PR on social media,  educating myself on the history of women in medicine, and amplifying female healthcare professionals on social media. It is crucial to continue supporting women’s health and achievements beyond this month. First, I will advocate for change by supporting regulations and initiatives that promote women's equality, rights, and health. Second, I will support women-owned businesses and initiatives, increasing the possibilities for women to succeed and grow financially. Finally, I will strive to continue elevating the voices of women, particularly those who are part of marginalized or underrepresented groups. I will utilize social media outlets to communicate their viewpoints, accomplishments, and stories.
